jay-z ain’t it funny - New Album “American Gangster”
Jay-Z will release a new album called “American Gangster” Tuesday November 6th.
The release is Jay-Z’s first concept album and is inspired by the up-coming movie of the same name starring Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington.
According to the New York Times, the album came together over the past few weeks after Jay-Z was shown the film, directed by Ridley Scott, in which Denzel Washington portrays Frank Lucas, a early 1970s Harlem heroin kingpin.
Jay-Z has already recorded nine tracks for the album almost every one prompted by a specific scene.
“It was like I was watching the film, and putting it on pause, and giving a back story to the story,†he told the Times.
The first song from “American Gangster” entitled “Blue Magic” is expected to be released Sept. 20. The track is produced by the Neptunes Pharrell Williams. The song is said to have a 80s New York feel to it.
Denzel Washington had reportedly asked the film’s producer, Brian Grazer to persuade Jay-Z to record the film’s soundtrack.
“I just didn’t think there’d be enough for Jay-Z to do,†Mr. Grazer said, explaining that he resisted because he and Mr. Scott felt the movie required an authentic 1970s feel.
“No Hook”, a song on “American Gangster” has Jay-Z rhyming the following lines:
“Please don’t compare me to other rappers. Compare me to trappers.
I’m more Frank Lucas than Ludacris. And Lude is my dude, I ain’t trying to dis.
Just like Frank Lucas is cool, but I ain’t tryin’ to snitch.
I’m-a follow the rules, no matter how much time I’m-a get.
I’m-a live and die with the decisions that I’m-a pick.”
On another new song called “Pray”, Jay-Z touches on his swagger:
“‘Mindstate of a gangster from the 40’s, meet business mind of Motown’s Berry Gordy,’”
